Stop Smoking Products That Can Help You Quit

There are more and more products on the market that can help you go smoke free. So how do you choose the right stop smoking product for you?

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) stop smoking products are available in many forms, all of which work to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms by providing nicotine without the associated harmful effects of cigarettes. In addition to NRT, newer prescription drugs are available that work on the brain to reduce cravings. NRT is presently available as a gum, patch, lozenge, micro-tab, nasal spray or inhalator. What are the features of each form of stop smoking aid?

Nicotine Gum

When chewed, the gum releases nicotine which is then absorbed from the lining of the mouth. Since nicotine supply is only released when a person chew the gum, it causes a spike in the concentration of nicotine in the blood, similar to that seen when a person smokes a cigarette. The gums are now available in a variety of flavours such as mint, freshmint and freshfruit to suit different tastes. They also come in different strengths so that individuals that smoke a few cigarettes a day can use lower strengths. Usually those that smoke 10 or less cigarettes per day only need a 2mg gum whereas those that smoke more than 10 cigarettes may need a 4mg gum to begin with. Some people may experience irritation of the lining of the mouth with nicotine chewing gums.

Nicotine Patch

These provide a more discreet form of NRT as compared to the chewing gum.. The nicotine is absorbed through the skin and directly into the bloodstream. They are available in a 24hr and a 16 hr formulation that can be worn overnight or during the day only respectively. The 24 hour patch is useful for people that have early morning cravings but may cause difficulty sleeping due to the stimulant effect of nicotine. The patches are in different strengths and each pack usually contains enough for 7 days. It is recommended that you begin with the lowest strength based upon the number of cigarettes you smoke per day and gradually reduce the strength. Patients may experience skin irritation on the site of application of the patch.

Microtabs

Microtabs, also available in more than one strength, dissolve under your tongue and provide nicotine in a way similar to nicotine gums. Microtabs dissolve relatively quickly as compared to lozenges.

Lozenges

Lozenges, that are sucked, slowly release nicotine into the bloodstream through the mouth over 20-30 minutes. They may cause some irritation of the mouth.

Inhalators

Inhalators look like a plastic cigarette and are useful in individuals that miss the "hand to mouth" habit of smoking. Also known as stop smoking cigarettes, they release nicotine vapour into the mouth and throat from where it is absorbed.

Nasal Sprays

These result in a spike in blood levels of nicotine as the spray releases nicotine into the nose and is quickly absorbed.

Prescription Medications.

Zyban and Chantix are both available only on prescription since they work on the nervous system and alter the way in which our bodies responds to nicotine and reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Any of these stop smoking products can help you quit. However, you must have the commitment to give it a fair go!
