Resveratrol Supplements Explain The French Paradox

Resveratrol supplements have the same antioxidant properties found in red wine, which have been shown to provide protection against cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown the French don't overeat or snack between meals, and as a result have lower rates of obesity that other parts of the world. They also consume moderate amounts of red wine with their meals, and although their diet is high in saturated fats, the incidence of heart disease is relatively low. This has been attributed to the concentration of resveratrol in red wine. However, doctors are wary of encouraging anyone to start drinking alcohol because too much alcohol can have many harmful effects on your body. A better way to obtain the benefits of resveratrol is to take supplements.

Benefits Of Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a phytoalexin, an antibiotic produced by plants under attack, and supplements are made both by chemical synthesis and extracted from plants. A high concentration of resveratrol is found in grapes and therefore in grape seed extract. Resveratrol research published over the past two years suggest that resveratrol can inhibit the development of malignant cells in cells and protect DNA from free radical damage. The benefits of reservatrol include:
  • Decreased risk of heart disease
  • Lower cholesterol levels
  • Decreased risk of stroke: reservatrol keeps the blood vessels open and elastic thereby preventing clots.
  • Protection against Alzheimers disease
  • Prevention of colon and skin cancer
  • Weight loss
  • Protection potentially harmful chemicals
  • Antioxidant

Supplementation With Reseveratrol

Resveratrol in a similar way to Coenzyme Q10 and alpha lipoic acid can be used as a powerful chemoprotective agent. The recommended starting dose is about 20-50mg a day and increased gradually up to 400mg per day if used as an anti-aging and chemoprotective supplement.

If you are taking oral anticoagulants or aspirin, seek advice from a a healthcare provider before taking resveratrol supplements, as it causes thinning of the blood. Resveratrol is not recommended for children and pregnant or lactating women. Reservatrol side effects have been reported with doses greater than 500mg and include diarrhoea, over thinning of blood, anxiety and headaches.
