Shortlist Of Low Calorie Foods

This low calorie foods list is useful if you are trying to learn how to eat healthier. You will be familiar with the "eat fewer calories and burn more" logic when trying to lose weight. This is a handy shortlist of filling foods low in calories.

Calories To Lose Weight

What is a calorie? One calorie is the amount food required to increase the temperature of one kilogram of water by one centigrade. In this respect, fats provide the highest amount of calories, followed by carbohydrates and sugars and finally proteins. Naturally lean meats, fruits and vegetables are therefore the lowest calorie food groups. Check how many calories you should be eating on a daily basis, and from which food groups, using our calorie calculator.

Food List

Below is a shortlist of the foods.
  • High Protein Foods. Low calorie foods that are high in proteins include primarily meats and animal products such as chicken breast, low fat yoghurt, lean beef, turkey, egg whites and low fat cheese. Naturally, you still need to limit your serving sizes and not overdo it!
  • Low Calorie Fruits. When eaten fresh, apricots, apples, melon, currants and grapefruits provide the least calories and plenty of vitamins and fiber.
  • Low Calorie Vegetables. While most vegetables are low in calories, it is useful to know that brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, broccoli, celery mushroom, tomatoes, watercress, swede, red peppers are some of the vegetables that contain the least calories.
  • Canned and Packet Soups. Most of these are low in calories, as long as you limit yourself to a single serving. Always check the labels though. Soup makes a healthy snack.
  • Breakfast Bars These can be filling as they are high in fiber. Once again, read the labels and ensure that they are not overloaded with sugar or fat. A good bar should have an energy value of 100 Cals, and no more than a gram of fat.
  • Water. Water is essential to keep your body hydrated. It also helps you feel full. Beverages such as a cup of coffee, or hot chocolate (fat-free of course!) is also a good filler. Water can help you lose weight.

When following a healthy diet, keep in mind that low calorie foods may not necessarily be the healthiest option as some of the prepackaged foods are loaded with sodium that is low in calories but provides flavor to the foods and helps with preservation.
