Kids Eating Healthy - Devoloping Healthy Eating Habits For a Lifetime

Are your kids eating healthy? Trying to follow healthy eating guidelines with kids can be a daunting task considering all the unhealthy options available to them. Developing healthy eating habits for kids is essential in today's world of fast food.

Healthy Eating For Kids

Trying to make your kids eat their "veges" with their meal can be a tough ask, as children today have a huge variety of junk food easily available to them, which modern parents pressed for time often resort to. However, it is vital that as a parent you make sure that you provide your kids with the most nutritional meals and ensure that they develop lifelong habits for good health. Children today live a pretty much sedentary lifestyle, with little exercise and outdoor activity. They would much rather watch cartoons and play video games than go play ball outside. Its not a surprise that a large percentage of kids are faced with obesity at such an earlier age.

Developing Healthy Eating Habits For Kids

The best way to get kids eating healthy is to gradually help them develop healthy eating habits. Obviously this is easiest done when you start from day 1! However, its never too late. Replace unhealthy options with healthier foods one at a time. Below are a few ways that you can help your kids develop healthy eating habits:
  1. Have specific meal times and try include the whole family at these times.
  2. Serve a variety of foods. Include vegetables and fruits in appetising ways.
  3. Show your kids how healthy food can be delicious, by eating it yourself.
  4. Let your kids help you prepare the meals. That way they will feel more involved
  5. Avoid food battles. Ask your kids what they would like for dinner and spice it up with all the healthy stuff
  6. Allow your kids to talk to you and enjoy meal times. Avoid lectures or arguments during this time.

Healthy Eating Schedule

Kids are much happier and are less likely to have a battle with you if their meals look appealing. Children love anything with chocolate, strawberry... and the list goes on. Below is an example of a healthy meal plan for your kids right from breakfast through to dinner.

  • Breakfast: Bowl of cereal with semi-skimmed milk, you can add some fruit in the cereal to make it more appetising and a fresh glass of juice.
  • Break-time: Yoghurt or fruit smoothie or even a flavoured box of milk and a breakfast cereal bar.
  • Lunch: Sandwich made from tuna, salad and cheese, a fruit and a bottle of water or fresh juice.
  • After school: Packet of nuts or low-fat chips and a glass of hot-chocolate.
  • Dinner: Spaghetti Bolognese made with less meat, more vegetables and minimum oil, salad, fresh juice and one serving of ice cream.

Such a meal plan would include all the nutrients your kids require in a day and keep them healthy at the same time. The meals are appetising and your kids would enjoy eating them too. Try keep rotating their meals so they do not get bored of eating the same thing everyday.

Encourage your kids to develop healthy eating habits from an early age. As they grow older it is harder to make them like what they don't or try new things. Your kids eating healthy means that you will be visiting the paediatrician less often.
