Taking Chocolate For Health

Taking chocolate for health benefits is something that is strange to most of us. We've always been told that chocolate as a confectionary item is bad for us.

It will rot our teeth and like any sweet we should stay away from it especially if we want to lose weight. In the last 10 years there has been a lot of research investigating the benefits of chocolate. More specifically the benefits of dark chocolate.

The Contents Of Chocolate

While not all chocolate is good for you, chocolate does have certain health properties and like any food should be eaten in moderation. Chocolate comes from the cacao tree, in its raw form has a very bitter taste. Once it's processed there are 3 types of chocolate we normally can choose from: White; milk and dark chocolate.

White chocolate consists of very little chocolate normally in the form of cocoa butter. It consists of mainly milk and sugar. Milk chocolate is a mixture of chocolate, milk (sometimes even condensed milk) and sugar. Dark chocolate is mainly cocoa with a little bit of milk and less sugar then most other chocolates.

The high sugar content in most chocolates can be bad for our health. This is what is responsible for rotting the teeth and increasing our blood sugar levels quickly, so when our blood sugar levels drop (just as quickly) we start craving more sugar rich food which in turn leads to weight gain and bad health especially if you are diabetic.

When taking chocolate for health benefits the best chocolates to reach for are dark chocolates. This is because they contain more cocoa which is the part that contains all the beneficial components in dark chocolate and less sugar.

The Benefits Of Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is known to contain compounds called flavonoids. Flavonoids have an antioxidant effect in the body. Research has shown that dark chocolate contains up to 4 times more antioxidant then black tea.

Studies have shown that the flavonoids in cocoa have the potential to:

  • Reduce blood pressure - by upregulating nitric oxide production causing blood vessels to expand;
  • Have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body;
  • Reduce the risk of diabetes - this is thought to work via the antioxidant effects of coca influencing insulin resistance;
  • Protect nerves from injury and inflammation;
  • Protect against UV damage - if applied to the skin;
  • Give you a feeling of satiety - this could be due to its fat content;
  • Improve cognitive function and mood.

To gain some of the beneficial functions of dark chocolate it is recommended to take 2 small squares of dark chocolate on a regular basis. However all chocolate contains saturated fats, so before consuming chocolate for health benefits it is important that we first eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
