Calorie Reduction Has A Double Bonus

Calorie reduction helps you to lose weight, but there is now evidence from animal studies that caloric restriction also slows down aging and can extend your life span. A calorie restriction diet is one that aims to reduce calorie intake by approximately 20-40% lower than a typical diet but at the same time obtaining the necessary nutrients and minerals.

Benefits Of Caloric Restriction

While calorie reduction studies have shown to increase life-span up to 40%, studies to date have been carried out on animals, and not extended to humans. However, calorie restriction has been shown to reduce DNA damage, clean cells, enhance DNA repair, protect against heart aging, slow down Alzheimers progression and reduce inflammation and muscle loss. Calorie control has also been shown to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The other key benefit of reducing calories of course, is weight loss.

Ways Of Following A Reduced Calorie Diet

Cutting calories is not the easiest of tasks, and most people would find it difficult to go on a strict calorie restricted diet. A better option is to take a moderate approach and substitute lower calorie alternatives for your normal high-calorie food. The best way is to eat foods that have a low caloric density. This means eating foods that are rich in fiber and volume but are filling foods that are low in calories.

Low Calorie Foods

Most vegetable are low in calories, but here is a list of some foods that are ideal for weight loss:
  • Brussels sprouts, broccoli, celery, mushrooms, red peppers
  • Legumes
  • Fish
  • Turkey breast
  • Lentils
  • Boiled Noodles
  • Tofu
  • Fat free yoghurt

As fat has 9 calories per gram, as opposed to protein or carbohydrates which have 4 calories per gram, or alcohol which has 7 calories per gram, substituting low fat foods for normal versions will automatically help you reduce calories. However, you have to be careful to check the food label to make sure that although the food may be low fat, it is not high in sugar, as sugar is high in calories.

Lose Weight By Healthy Eating

If you are looking to lose weight lose, the key is not to starve yourself but find ways for calorie control. Swap your junk food for healthier option such as fruits for snack times. Healthy living does not only depend on diet but also on lifestyle changes such as decreased alcohol intake. Exercise also plays a vital role in keeping your body healthy and fit. Including all these factors into your lifestyle is likely to give you a healthier life away from chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Calorie reduction should be implemented together with all these factors to have the greatest effect.
