Basal Metabolic Rate and Calories Burned

The BMR Calorie Calculator determines how many calories you need to eat in a day to maintain your current weight. One way of calculating this is to use the formula for basal (resting) metabolic rate and based on your activity level, estimate your daily calorie burn off. Although not one hundred percent accurate, this is a good way of calculating how many calories you would need. This calculator uses the formula for Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) devised by doctors at the University of Nevada Medical School and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1990, then uses the Harris Benedict activity multiplier to determine your estimated daily caloric burn off.

If you are trying to lose weight, use the BMR calorie calculator to find your calorie maintenance level for your optimal or target weight, based on a moderate activity level.

The following formula is used to calculate calories in individual components of food:

  • 1 gram of Fat = 9 Calories
  • 1 gram of Protein = 4 Calories
  • 1 gram of Carbohydrate = 4 Calories
The results below include a breakdown of how much of your daily calorie intake should come from fat, protein and carbohydrate, and what the value of this is in grams.
