Body Fat Index Calculator For Measurement of Body Mass Index

This body fat index calculator measures Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a statistical estimate of your total body fat based on your weight and height.

Although the BMI does not actually measure percentage of body fat, it is a useful tool to judge if you are at healthy weight, based on the ratio of your weight to your height. The limitations of this tool are that it does not take into individual factors such as bone size, body frame, muscle fat or abdominal fat. It should therefore not be taken as a final evaluation of your health. You can measure body fat using tools such as body fat scales and skinfold measurements.

BMI can be misleading in the case of athletes, such as bodybuilders who have significantly more muscle mass, in children, and in certain ethnic groups. For Chinese, Indian and Malaysian people, a BMI greater than 23 is regarded as overweight and a BMI greater than 27.5 is regarded as obese.

The National Institute of Health provides the following general guideline for interpreting BMI scores:

Below 18.5 - Underweight

18.5 to 24.9 - Normal

25 to 29.9 - Overweight

30 and above - Obese


A BMI over 25 can be associated with a higher level of fat, as well as higher blood pressure, increased incidence of diabetes and/or greater risk of heart disease. If your BMI is over 25, you should consult your doctor, and consider making some diet and lifestyle changes to improve your health.
